The quick and dirty bass trap approach works quite well and is one approach that you can consider. I've attached a link to Jon Risch's acooustic DIY pages below.
There are a number of other ways of building bass traps besides the quick and dirty trap and Jon's version of the tube trap. A good source of information on the various approaches is Everest's "Master Handbook of Acoustics" which includes info on how to build traps and panels of several kinds, plus diffusors, and also discusses how best to use acoustic treatment. He also provides specific advice for home listening rooms and for home recording studios. I think it's a very good book and well worth reading.
I'm also slowly reading Floyd Toole's new book "Sound Reproduction" at the moment. His approach to the content is different . He concentrates on listening rooms rather than recording and covers the acoustical research and develops recommendations from that, especially in relation to surround sound systems, but he doesn't give info on DIY treatments, or at least he hasn't in the chapters I've read so far. If you're interested in treating a room his book is also worth reading and his recommendations seem similar in large part to Everest's.
If you specifically want info on how to build your own treatments I'd stick to Everest or use Jon Risch's designs. Even if you decide to go with Jon's designs, I'd recommend reading Everest in order to get a better understanding of how and why the treatments work and what their effect within a room is.
