1. You could use hogwire instead of cardboard, but why? The hogwire is a pain to work with, the cardboard easy.
2. Nah, the foam should be OK acoustically for corner use if it has the convoluted surface, however, be aware that foam does tend to deteriorate over time, and eventually it may start to fall apart or crumble. A lot depends on the exposure to ozone, and other deleterious effects, such as sunlight, heat, etc.
3. Stick with plan A, the traps will help the bass and help control some of the echo's, but the upper corners will still need some help.
4. The rockwool may or may not be a slight improvement in terms of acoustic absorption, but that depends on the specifics. However, it is not necessarily any 'safer' than fiberglass, and I would not count on that as an excuse to not wrap it in polyester batting. For these corner slap echo absorbers, the fiberglass should work just fine.
