Adding sound absorbing material of a moderate to high density on the back of such diffusor panels would absorb some bass energy, esp. if the panels were spaced off the wall a few inches.
So while they wouldn't do much to the direct acoustics, they would indirectly help with the room's bass energy levels. Of course, if you already have bass traps, or lots of bass absorption already, not necessarily a desirable thing.
Oh, it could also help damp the wood panels, and unless they are built VERY solidly (thick backing panel) and well glued, they can tend to resonate at a certain set of frequencies, adding their own coloration to the sound in the room.
