I would recommend absorption. This would apply to rooms up to about 15-18 feet wide by 25 to 30 feet deep.Larger rooms would probably benefit from a combination of absorption and diffusion, and some companies offer such retail products as "abfussors".
Another aproach would be to use a tube trap type of absorber, one which has a midly reflective surface on one half of the device, this half can then be faced into the room, and the angle adjusted for best results.For info on DIY acoustic treatments, see:
