The saga

Yes, they're all decent amps, speakers and wires..I went thru them all again, in almost every permutation over the past 2 months, with numerous friends having to endure listening sessions (lubricated with wine) to have more opinions about the sound..I'll sell some of them, and deploy the others in other rooms..But, with the real traps in place, you could really hear the differences between them, whereas without the RTs, the differences were only marginal.

As an example - my longterm main speaker was the Rogers Studio 1A..Now all the old reviews said it has a bloated bass. I never heard that, and happily used the speakers for 14 years - I thought the bass was great, and it was, as my various listening rooms over the years ate up some of it..(room tuning eq built in??). In the new house, even this became deficient, thus the hunt for new speakers.

I had heard the Proac R3.5 a decade ago, loved the sound, and could not afford them then. Now the prices are cheap, so I bought those to try out, and..no bass. I clearly remembered very good bass, so I knew the problem was elsewhere. Maybe imcompatible amps?

So I asked questions here about sand filling the bases, and wires with bass. This resulted in the Wireworld speaker wires, which do have very nice bass, but cost as much as the speakers. Also, people in the speaker asylum suggested I change amps to something with more heft. I learned that Proac voices with ARCs, thus the change to ARC amps.

Even with the ARCs, something was missing. The ARCs with Rogers Studio 1As sounded easier to listen to, and many in my listening panels thought I should sell the Proacs..But I had my memories of the R3.5s, and knew what they could do..

Then I learned that the R3.8 was created to improve the bass performance of the PROACs. Maybe these really did not have bass..I almost bot a pair of R3.8s to try out, but then sanity prevailed, and I decided to treat the room.

Anyway, now that the room is tuned the Proacs turn out to have VERY clean bass..I think its very clean, and when its really there, it shows up and its deep, as opposed to midrange sneaking down. Maybe its the R3.8 thats bloated to make up for room nodes?

And the Rogers turn out to have a bloated bass after all, especially when compared to the Proacs. Now, there it too much bass!

The only speaker that I've not gone back and retried w/ the various amps is the Spendor S8. A friend wants them, so I boxed them up nicely, and have not had the energy to unpack them, and repack them again..I'm happy w/ the Proacs..almost - someone local has Proac R4s for sale..

Like I said before, I can't recommend the real traps more highly. They are the single best part of my system, as they allow me to hear the rest of it, and the music.

Happy listening..Samir.
