Re: Attn Jon Risch - Improving Bass on Maggies with Baffles

All that said, one bass trap directly in back of a planar speaker will do more than your entire list of tweaks, guaranteed.
Yes, it is good to anchor the panles, and to assure tha they are not rocking or moving, but I tend to assume this has already been addressed by most planar owner's, as they find the improvements they offer.

Sorry that's not my experience either ;-)

I really find the tt create as many problems as they solve--esp. higher up in the mid to upper bass region. I played with them for years and finally sold them.

If you're going to play with tube traps or MGD panels, the best area to play with and treat is between the wall between the speakers. That will affect the bass/imaging/focus/image height.

[note: one should always play with the distance from the rear wall to the speaker as that can have and does have profound effects upon dipole cancellation effects. That in my estimation is the first area to play with when experiencing bass problems with dipoles.Fractions of an inch make all the difference in the world-as does the distance beween speakers. Too far and the speakers lose center fill and sound too thin; too close and the illusion sounds murky and loses transparency.]

One should also experiment with some MGD pillows stuck up on the interesection between the wall and ceiling, roughly a third in from each side. That (in combo with corner tunes) will affect slap echo and dynamics. One must be very careful when playing with RT devices to listen and pay particular attention to the areas from 100-250 Hz, dynamics and upper octave extension. Too often people treat the wall behind the panels (not my recommendation) in order to ameliorate what they percieve as a problem in the upper octaves--when it's really lower down--in the upper midrange area. Caveat emptor ;-)
