I've had good success with carpet squares. Just go to your favorite carpet store and ask them if they sell their old samples. I bought four 2'x3' carpet square samples for $2.00. It's hard to beat $0.50 a square. They also worked quite well at absorbing early (miror point) reflections. I currently have Jon Risch's DIY panels on my "to do" list though. Should be a huge upgrade from the carpet, or any other stick on type absorber. Try a google search for Jon Risch and check out his DIY designs. Cheap and aparently effective.
