I finished 6 panels, 48"x30", and hung 2 on the wall behind me and made legs for the other 4 to make them portable. The best positioning in my room turned out to be putting one right behind each speaker and the last two 8" out from the front wall at about 6' apart. This was after weeks of experimenting. Go with Pete's suggestions first, then keep experimenting. Every room is different. You can really make your system sing once you get it right.
For really awesome improvement, build some of Jons bass traps. I've built 6 4'x16" traps and talk about stunning bass. I can't imagine it getting any better. You'll hear definite changes in sonics with just small changes in placement of the panels and traps.
