Always trust your ears. Unless you're inviting critics to your place and trying to win an award, your ears are the best judge.Rather than reposition the panels that you have, I'd make some more. Other places you may want to try them is the first reflection point on the side walls, and directly behind the listening position. Remember that the less distance a reflected wave tavels between your speakers and ears (as well as the fewer surfaces it reflects off of before reaching your ears), the more likely it is to muck with your imaging. Don't neglect your ceiling (although ceiling mounting is more difficult and potentially hazardous). Also, spacing the panels away from the wall a bit will allow them to be effective to a lower frequency, but they primarily work from the mids and up. To absorb any bass you'll need tube traps or a different type of wall panel.
