I agree. If you've ruled-out any cone/surround and spider/basket separation, then the "offset finger test" as you've described, is the classic indicator of a misaligned VC. As a double-check, try it without any signal applied to the speaker, and see if you can verify an azimuthal bias to inducing a VC rub.

If so, the solution may be to rotate the speaker 180 degrees in the cabinet, or, far more certainly, to buy a replacement unit.
