High-pitched whine are mostly due to the fact that those devices actually using the lower class of the IDE drives, which are known to make a lot of noise running @ 5400rpm.The only possible way is to upgrade the HD to something better: i.e. IBM Deskstar 7200rpm HD or similar ATA100 HD. MAke sure that you get the hardware serviced by your qualitified serviceman or otherwise it will not work at all. I'm also making the assumption that there is a small computer controller built-in to run a core OS kernel and for that a new 7200rpm HD requires re-installation/configuration of all that too....
