Hi Sampsa,"I'm thinking of doing two 12"-16" diameter and 6' tall tubetraps from pipe insulation and was wondering if they would support a plant on top of them. That would make SO much better looking and blend SO much better into the room. But will they carry the weight or bend in the middle?"
That depends on the weight of the plant and the material you use to seal the ends. On the ones I built, I used plywood circles to seal the ends instead of the sheetrock suggested in the instructions I found. I built 9" and 16" traps and see no reason why a potted plant of reasonable weight (whatever that is) couldn't sit atop one without any problems.
One thing to keep in mind:
The fabric I stretched over the tubes is stapled to the end circles and there are places where it bunches up. If you do something similar and have too much fabric in certain places, this could result in a non-level end surface which could cause the traps to tilt when stood on the floor. Adding a few small "feet" to the end circle of the trap will fix this.Hope this helps.
Happy Listening!
