To add some more tidbits from the memory bank:Years ago, we made some cartridge prototypes that were essentially moving-coil cartridges with a single-turn coil. The output voltage was on the order of 0.01~0.02mV. On the voltage-amplification amplifiers of the day, the sound was decidedly eccentric - soft, delicate and beautiful, together with soggy bass, ill-defined imaging and soundstaging. But with current-amplification, the sound changed dramatically for the better. Meat and energy to go along with the delicacy, tight rhythms, well-defined imaging, and excellent frequency extension top and bottom.
If there were more current-amplification phono stages available, I think that more cartridge designers would be willing to make ultra-low-impedance cartridges. Conversely, if there were fewer medium-to-high impedance cartridges on the market, I imagine that more phono stage designers would be willing to build current-amplification phono stages.
