Re: a classy problem

Firstly, there is no such thing as a semi class A amp. It either is class A or it isn't (which means it's prabably class AB1).

Secondly, it isn't a good idea to just increase the size of components without knowing the effect on the circuit. I presume by 'final' caps you mean the filter caps in the power supply? Larger power supply caps will cause extra current during turn on, but will not have any other effect, so they probably are not making the amp run hot, unless the old ones have gone leaky. It is also a good idea to replace caps, not just strap new ones across them.

Why did you have to chage the transformer? Did the old one fail? Are you sure it was 2x17 volts? It changes quite a lot under load, and different transformers will change different amounts for the same load depending on many things. I think it is unlikely you are running the amp at the correct voltage.

I also think that 100 watts may be too small, if your amp puts out 50 watts. Hard to say. Then again 45 degrees is not very hot really. Rule of thumb, if you can keep your hand on the transformer without pain (think about a really hot mug of coffee) after it has been working hard for a fair while, then it's probably OK.
