A few of the opamps I picked out to try were selected by combing through data sheets and looking at the specs. These included the AD826, LT1364 and opa637, and the LM7171 (4100v/u! I picked that one to try in a regulation scheme -- I've yet to see how it works, but thought the "sound" of it was ok, and yes it sounded fast).
Specs might tell me that I would like the AD826s more than the 825s. Listening told me that I like the tonal vivacity of the 825s and thought the 826s had a very mild grey monochromacity in the upper frequencies, despite having a slew (get it?) of other strengths. Naturally, everybody's mmv vs function and implementation. It was interesting to compare sound vs topology too. The 825s are a FET input design, the 826s are bipolar, though having fewer semiconductors in the circuit.
