RIGHT ON with this.
In urban areas there is so much "grunge" hovering around and inside our poor (hallowed) audio electronics; doing who knows what to it/them and the sound they emanate.
Since much of it is very high frequency RF energy, perhaps some of the metallic "snake-oil tweaks" work by actually shunting fields away from the equipment; which also would explain why a positive result in one location may not be "transferable" to another.
Certain manufacturers send samples of their equipment to labs where they can be subjected to fields "from DC to light" and try to measure the effects. The test can include measuring what the samples also generate. These are expensive and usually only done where "local" regulations require (European Union?).
The long-term "unknown effects" of genetically-modified foods also comes to mind.
