Art V,
I've used streaming in combination with a tuner in my office for quite some time. This is for the same reason that you cite, which is to receive broadcasts outside radio range. I listen to BBC3, WGH, Boston, Radio Netherlands, and a couple of great programmes no longer broadcast in Los Angeles: "Pipedreams" and "St. Paul Sunday".
I think the easiest way to do this is to have a good soundcard- in my office I use an M-Audio "Audiophile" 2496 ($100)- medium quality. There are of course, Firewire outboard recording cards which have higher quality DAC's, but the results from the M-Audio are surprisingly good. With additional soundcard inputs or switching the wires, you can simply input from the turntable to make very good digital transfers. I make files in Cakewalk Home Studio and name the tracks, edit, etc, then onto CD-R. Use reasonable interconnects (I use Audioquest Diamondback) to the preamp AUX. In my previous office I used an Audio Research LS3 and D130 and at one time had the Cambridge Audio 640C CD player, a Revox B160 tuner, and the streaming as sources.
Streaming literally opens up the world of radio, but the quality varies considerably- I have rarely heard really great quality- the BBC sometimes kicks my stream down from 128K to 28K for example, but you get to hear it. - I've been going through the Pipedreams archives for months catching up on the years I missed- fantastic!
Cheers,
Bambi B
