c3conv2,
I have only one tube receiver, a Fisher 800C, and I suppose a near receiver, a McIntosh MX110 tuner/preamp with an MC240. Solid state receivers are Marantz 2235 and 2275.
Thought I like the Marantz 2235 very much- and it's the first piece of audio gear I ever owned- the Fisher 800 (1965)- which still has it's 8 original Telefunken 12AX7 smooth plates- is just wonderful. The 2235 has a pleasant sweetness to it, but there is that hint of early solid state tubby bass that is not as attractive as the more transparent and effortless bass of the Fisher. This is not the fast, accurate, pinpoint imaging of the Audio Research SP10 and D115, but I can listen for hours to the deep, liquid sound and the soundstage and resolution is just fine. Fisher took their tuner sections seriously and the 800 tuner is so good, when I was considering vintage tuners, the Fisher 90 and 100 were high on the list [I bought a Revox B160, McIntosh MR67 and MR77]. The 800 is nicely made too- not as glam as the MR67, but nicely solid- the 800 weighs a ton. These have gone up in value in the last several years, but I think are still bargains and likely to hold their value.
Based on my experience with the MX110, though I've not heard the McIntosh tube receivers- or else it's been 35 years- and I would think those would be worth looking into.
Cheers,
Bambi B
