Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

Here's a crazy idea for Revox B760 meters and B760 vs. B160

legarem,

Sorry the German Revox parts source didn't produce results.

Revox B760 meters: My other thought- and probably more practical- is to join Tuner Information Center if you haven't already and post there for the parts. My guess is that given the original and current cost and quality of a Revox B760, there probably have been relatively few parted out. I like Audio Research gear and while there is ailing stuff, I never see "parts" units.

Here's an idea- possibly a bit nutty, but that might save the original meters. If the problem is that the meter faces are melted but the meters are still functional: Remove the the meter faces and scan them into a good drawing programme- Illustrator or CorelDraw. Increase the contrast and clean up the meter scales and lettering in the scan. Arrange the images on a template for CD labelling. Find some Plexi of the same thickness and colour and cut it into a CD disc size. Find a printer that prints on printable CD, print the meter scales on the Plexi and then cut to size. I'm not sure of the durability of the printing from an inkjet, though the heat from the proper lamps might not be too much. -Just a thought,.. Of course this same process could be done with silkscreening. If this works, you might some extras and sell them to others trying to get their B760's in proper order.

Revox B760 vs. B160: It was about 4 years ago that I saw vintage tuner prices rising quickly to the point that I felt if I didn't get "settled" with tuners- have two tuners that I really liked, I wouldn't be willing to pay the cost.

My first choice was the McIntosh MR67, mostly as my main tuner for 15 years was a McIntosh MX110 and the tuner section is related to the MR67- fantastic in every way. I had the caps all replaced, alignment and all new tubes done.

My plan was to have a great tube and a great solid state tuner for those long hours in the office. My number one solid state choice was a Revox B760. I'd heard these when new and over the years come across one or two, and by reputation, felt this was the finest solid state tuner sound around. However, as they were getting on in years, so complex, and expensive to buy and work on, I decided to try the later series- no ne pays attention to these- and the B160 with the original box and very little use cost $260- less than half of a 760 then in similar condition. The build quality of the B160 is superb- 7 power supplies, and specifications are very good, it can be remote controlled by a B208, and the sound is really excellent. I'd never heard a B160 before buying it, but I was impressed immediately. The other tuner I tried was a McIntosh MR77 which I chose as I think they are actually better sounding than their brother the MR78 which I feel suffers from complex filtering circuits- or something! I A/B'b the B160 and MR77 and I and everyone who heard this comparison chose the B160 in about half a minute. The Revox was accurate and dynamic, was quieter, a very good detail and imaging, while and the MR77 had a bit of a hollow bass and overall was noticeably less transparent.

Let us know how you get on with your B760- in my view it's well worth putting right- one of the best ever!

Cheers,

Bambi B
