Thanks for the alternate MPX recommendation. Perhaps I can build two stand-alone units and compare.
I have read some opinions to the effect that it may actually be better to use an IC to do the stereo MPX decoding than to do it with discrete parts, whether tube or solid state, the reason being that it takes a fairly complex circuit to do it well. I've seen some of the original math on old patents involved with the FM MPX system, and it's over my head. (And I went through third semester calculus in college.)
Tim de Paravicini designed an MPX unit using two tubes and an IC. In the article about it, he said it would have taken 8 tubes to build an equivalent all-hollow state model.
