Solid-state tuners are more reliable when 30 years old vs even older tube type tuners. A tube type tuner can be a good buy if restored & upgraded by a tech. And, higher quality solid-state tuners are better than unmodified tube type tuners.
I find every tube type tuner I purchased out of alignment and a few way out. They also need a better grade of audio coupling capacitors to achieve highest quality sonics. All the Asian tube tuners I owned have a sh*t load of capacitors that were bad. Way worst than any US manufactured tube tuners I owned. A real bear to align are the older tube Pioneer tuners with the 6AQ8 front-end. They are extremely sensitive to an alignment & must be so carefully aligned for great sound. However, they do sound good plus do not drift out of a new alignment with varying heat/cold cycles. So, find a good tech to go thru a tube type tuner.
The older Kenwood tube tuners with the four I.F. stages are excellent. My Kenwood is now the best modified FM tuner to date and my modified Eico 2200 series was just unseated by the Kenwood. It was a tradeoff though. Wider soundstage with the Eico vs the vocals a little more alive in the room with the Kenwood. Next are the Fisher model KM60. A simple design without a lot of circuits messing up the signal. Simplicity is bliss. A stock Fisher KM60 handily outperforms a stock Eico 2200, but not a modified Eico 2200. Vintage tube Sherwoods are bargains with low prices. Forget the Eico ST-96 or 97 series though. I am just ok with tube type Scott tuners, but only owned two models.
Vintage solid-state tuners are best explained in the link in the other post, so I wont waste a lot of time here. IC based multiplexers for the most part outperform tube type multiplexers. And, solid-state tuners have more sensitive receivers with better adjacent FM station rejection (more selective).
I hope this is helpful.
