Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

RE: Looking for a Tuner...

If you are looking for a good reliable tuner that does well DX'ing and has good sound you may be able to find a McIntosh MR74 for around the $500 mark. I have purchased 2 on ebay one for slightly less than $500 and one for slightly more. Incidentally I prefer this tuner to an MR78 It's almost as good in the RF section and better audio. The tube tuners from Scott, Fisher and Sherwood are excellent once you have them restored to original Spec but they require attention that a solid state tuner does not need. As to the current sleeper in my opinion the Sherwood S-3300 series solid state tuners have excellent sound good DX'ing capability and can be found for less than $50 if you look. Also somewhat under rated are the early Scott Solid State & Hybrid models such as the 312 (Solid State), 350D(Hybrid)or LT112B (Solid State kit version of the 312). Hope this helps.
