Home Radio Road

Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

RE: Firing up my Shortwave Receiver again

Yup, a Drake TR4. The original version. I think it dates to around '65. I picked up 3 of them for a hundred bucks at a flea market 12 years ago. Only one had any tubes, and I got 'em with a homebrew power supply. The one works fairly well, although the finals may be a bit soft as I only get about 120W out. Or it could be the crap power supply. I'll check into that "sometime."

My uncle was a ham too, when I was a kid he gave me all his old QSTs (as well as about a thousand other electronics books & magazines, not to mention Allied, Lafayette, B-A, & Olson catalogs I endlessly drooled over.) Walter put up what I believe to be the first 2m repeater in northern Alabama. Then after 2 or 3 other guys started using it he took it down because it was getting too crowded. (He was more into making radios work than actually talking on them.)

That SX-71 was a nice piece for its day. I wouldn't mind having one now. I have a later S-108 in the garage but it's nowhere near as good (no crystal filters.)

I could go on, but I'll stop now...
