I hope the bands improve over time. I am able to receive a fair amount of 40m activity and very good 80m signals later in the evening.
Is that a TR4 as in Drake TR4 XCVR? That's an oldie - sort of. Of course anything Hallicrafters is probably older.
A good friend of mine who got his Novice license about the same time I did owned the Heathkit HW16 CW XCVR. That was an outstanding bargain rig and especially well suited to Novice CW operation with it's built-in 500Hz(?) CW filter. I was using my uncle's Hallicrafters SX-71 RX and a home made CW TX using 807 output tubes.
My most recent radio is the Yaesu FT170 handie talkie for 2m FM.
