Hi, Chef:
I also own a classic REL Precedent FM mono tuner.
At the request of my friend, John Atwood (of "One Electron"), several years ago, I handed over my tuner for him to go over and test. When I got the tuner from a private local estate sale, it was not working at all.
John not only repaired the tuner, but he also performed a complete rebuild, aligned the tuner and installed balanced diodes so that it worked properly. After bench-testing the unit, he told me that he was very impressed with the piece.
So, what I own, is not your average "found in the field" example of a REL Precedent. As with nearly all vintage gear, if it was found not working and had to have most of its original caps replaced after fifty years, sobeit. At least it works properly!
And yes, the majority opinion on the REL is that it is amongst the best sounding tuners of all time, inspite of its being monaural.
Some discussion about whether or not to adapt it for stereo with a multiplexer is sort of moot. The piece is incredible, simply incredible.
I also own the Fisher FM-1000, Mac MR-71, Sansui TU-9900, three Yamaha CT-7000s and three Marantz 10-Bs, not to mention various other vintage Fisher, Scott and other units.
The REL is better sounding than all of them.
There you go!
