Why? Due to some practical matters that can come up with ownership of any vintage equipment.
This was a kit tuner, so you cannot assume it was ever assembled correctly, which naturally makes debugging problems extra difficult. Then consider that the assembly manual and the schematic disagree on several points. (To be fair, there might have been updated documentation that I don't have...) And the small footprint leads to a cramped and difficult to service layout. As with any kit, much depends on the skill of the original builder.
On the plus side, it has built in MPX (de-MPX?) and a pleasant sound. Fairly nice looking, small footprint, and probably cheap if you should ever see one for sale. (I paid $4 for mine). This unit uses one of those "pre-aligned" front ends with the interesting 6C9 "10 pin 9-pin tube." I'm told some of the Heathkits used this module also, though don't know if this is a good thing. Throw in a 6BN8 and a 6AG11 Compactron and you have a technically interesting tuner.
There may be someone out there who has one of these that works great and sounds better than their McIntosh... If so speak up! Until then this model goes on my "know what you are getting into" list.
