1.25" OD, 16 gauge steel mast pipe is typical, and probably the best choice for the average size mast (up to 10 ft.). You can get it at Radio Shack and similar stores. Or you can buy steel pipe at a hardware store, clean it up and paint it. To prevent the inside from rusting, cap the top end. Make sure the mast pipe, antenna boom, and any associated mounting hardware such as a tripod, clamps, etc. are grounded (through the paint if painted).I wouldn't use a wood pole unless it's short and temporary.
