Good morning PRM,It's interesting to me how the people who enjoy FM critically seem to end up with multiple tuners. I never thought it would happen to me- and yet I have 5 tuners -plus three receivers. "Honest, I can stop any time I want to!"
I used my MX110 as my tuner in my (all tube) Audio Research system for the last 15-18 years and always loved the sound, thinking I might never need a component tuner.
Then, a friend gave me a Scott 330D which I had redone- and I fell in love with tube tuners-again- and even more- mono FM is really the magic! Later, I started an all solid-state Audio Research office system and bought the Revox B160- which is really good. But I missed the McIntosh blue light district romance and bought the MR-77, which I had high hopes for, but in A/B with the Revox is mysteriously a bit loose and dry- it was disappointing enough I think now it may not be in top order. Everyone who heard the A/B preferred the Revox. There was nothing for it- I missed the tubes and hence the impending MR67- which I believe is as close to the MX110 tuner as I could find ! Full circle returning to the beginning!
Of course, as msson as the familiar tube obsession-compulsion hit and I've bought 6- 6BL8s/ECF80/7643s- which I believe is the main audio amplifying tube and the only tube I didn't already have some NOS of.
With your MR67 experience, would you have comments on tube choices? I'd especially be interested in which tubes have sonic affect as I don't want to use a triple mica Siemens E81CC if a GE 6201 will do:
McIntosh MR67
3- 6AU6-- 1st, 2nd IF / 1st limiter (and I needed a spot for my one Mullard 10M!) Have you used the 6136?
2- 6BL8-- L&R audio amplifiers (Telefunken 7643, Philips SQ)
12AU7 -- MPX oscillator
12AT7-- 2nd RF amplifier, mixer
6DS4 -- Nuvistor 1st RF amplifier
6AB4 -- Oscillator
6CS6 -- 4th IF, 2nd limiter
EMM801-- tuning eye
6U8 -- MPX amplifier
6AV6 -- Muting amplifierAny thoughts you have appreciated !
Cheers,
Bambi B
