Seriously. I have owned the Scott and the Fisher. Several working Sherwood S-3000 Mk Vs have sold on Ebay for only $40 to $50 in the last few months. Some of you are not paying attention here folks.
"I call that a bargain. The best I ever had." A few caps replaced and the 6BS8 tube replaced is likely all you need to do and they will sound as good or better than any Scott or Fisher that I have heard. I haven't heard the more expensive ones, but I have heard some high priced Macs that left me with a "so what" impression.
A good SS Kenwood or Sansui can sound sensational, but can cost alot and it comes down to your preferences. The SS like Kenwood have better definition, but what the Sherwoods do with the human voice can be "spine tingling". I have had non-audiophiles in my listening room while the tuner was on, and when they heard the announcer's voice, they just stopped what they were doing and saying and looked toward that end of the room, mouth open. I have had to snap my fingers in front of their face to bring them back, "Hellooo!"
