Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

Re: Sherwood S-3000 V sounds lousy. Help/advice needed. .....

Pardon my lack of detail in the previous post.

I am saying I owned a few tube type vintage tuners in the last four years. I listen to tuners in factory stock condition, then aligned with serious tube rolling and finally with component modifications. I never found any of the tuners far out of alignment, however none of the tuners were 'spot on' alignment wise either.

As for sonics, a stock Scott 350D sounds slightly better than a stock EICO 2200 before and after alignment plus tube rolling. After coupling capacitor upgrades, the EICO outperformed the Scott 350D by a fair amount. The weakness of the EICO was ceramic coupling capacitors in the audio frequency circuits. The Scott 350D 12AT7 audio output tube was a less than great tube in the Scott circuit. I never did find a 12AT7 that performed well. At 80 vdc plate, one can sub a 12AU7 directly. The best tube is a 12AU7 Brimar. Second best is a Tungsram 12AU7.

You can read my review of the EICO 2200 on this site with mods I performed on that tuner.

What I consider a good FM tuner is when it starts to sound like a CD player on a quality FM station. Good quality FM stations are few in our area.
