Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

Re: Sherwood S-3000 V sounds lousy. Help/advice needed. .....

I never heard a super sounding factory stock tube tuner including some Scott, Fisher & EICO products. I have not heard any Marantz though. Once the vintage tuners are modified, they improve vastly. This includes coupling capacitor upgrades, rolling tubes & an alignment. I never found the original tuner alignment too far out, but it does help the sonics when properly aligned. I would suspect your Sherwood is capable of far superior sonics after alignment, installation of high quality parts & tube rolling.

The best tuner I heard to date is a modified EICO Classic 2200. Unfortunately, these are rare. I seen one for sale on eBay last winter located in Pennsylvania. No one bid the $78 asking price as no one knows of this unpopular FM tuner. I can say a stock Scott 350D is somewhat better than the EICO 2200, however after mods the EICO was better than Scott sonically. Part of the EICO advantage is the simplicity of the circuits (no extra baggage such as noise filters, etc.

I find AuriCap as coupling caps far superior to stock caps & these are replacing nasty ceramic types in the audio frequency range. So, one can imagine the difference in-between a stock & modified FM tuner.

As for tube rolling, I do not know anyone else that performs this with the same effort many apply to a tube amp.

If FM tuners for local broadcast had a strong market, I would be tempted to clone the EICO as a new unit. The only mod I would perform beyond quality parts is one extra I.F. section.
