Sherwood S-3000 V sounds lousy. Help/advice needed. .....

I have a Sherwood S-3000 V and it sounds quite thin to me. I retubed it, checking all the tubes prior to using them, and it still sounded very thin with minimal low end and anemic midrange. I have had a McIntosh MR78, a Sansui TU777 and a Marantz 10B in the system. These were not that far from each other in overall sound but the 10B was the clear winner. The Sherwood is miles away from these other tuners. Is this normal or do I need some work to be done on the tuner and if so, who works on them? Thanks.
