The Optimod, as it was initially, is automatic gain control done in
reverse - it's goes in front of the exciter and its job is to provide
maximize modulation without overmodulating - which is very bad and
pisses of nearby station operators.Then there is the equalization thats done so it sounds good in cars
and boomboxes. I learned this from a local Boston broadcast engineer
who shall remain nameless. :) The same broadcast engineer also
provided to me a pair of NOS, unused GE 211A's. :)Some programmes sound fantastic. Tune into Prairie Home Companion
on NPR or American Public Radio. It sounds warm and the soundstage
is deep deep deep and you catch alot of subtle audience ambiance. :)
My guess is that this programme is broadcast with equalization to
null and the Optimod bypassed.-- Jim
