I like tube type tuners.in fact, tube amps as well. Nothing wrong with vintage solid-state tuners, I just have better quality sound with tubes to date.I found a not so well known EICO Classic 2200 tube type tuner for $35 in excellent condition. I compared it to my modified Scott 350D FM tube tuner. At first, the Scott sounded better. After removing six capacitors (2 ceramic) with AuriCap & rolling tubes, the EICO outperformed the Scott. This EICO tuner sounds wonderful. The mulitplexer was designed in Denmark and is simply a better performer. The Scott 310E has the best multiplexer of the Scott tube tuners per statements from others, however the 350D is a solid performer.
The only issue is the EICO is not a very selective tuner and may not perform well in areas when receiving a weak station with a very strong FM station 500kHz away. If you can find an EICO Classic 2200 for a good price, you may want to grab it. Contact me for details on the inexpensive modifications.
