An all out, "balls to the wall", hotrod was done to the FM3 by the late John ("Buddha") Camille. Contact AA sponsor Bottlehead Corp. to get a copy of the writeup.
AVA published an article on the "care and feeding" of FM3s a while ago. I've provided a link below to the article.
BTW, have you considered a highly directional rhombic antenna, with "legs" sized at 2X the wavelength of interest? Such an antenna needs lots of room, but it would go a long way towards overcoming the sensitivity limitations of the FM3.
