I suspect that since you performed the work on the Eico, your perception of the sonics is elevated a little. This comes from a lot of "modifing" gear over the years. Everything I built has been SOTA, until I built something BETTER. Never ends, then after four of five upgrades, listen to the first one, surprise it is better sounding than you remember.
One simple tweak to perform on the Sony would be to remove the output coupling caps and ferrite beads. Replace with any good quality electrolytic. The stock caps are 2 ufd ceramic, and the ferrite beads effect will be made up some by the higher inductance of the electros. There is a bias voltage applied, so non-polar are not required here.
Brian Beezley's website has good info on these. There are lots of caps that can be swapped in the power supplies, diodes to be upgraded, resistors to be changed.
He sticks to circuit mods to make the unit more functional. But some are above the ability of most readers here.
I am glad the Eico shellacked the Sony at your house. But a modified to the Nth degree Sony is possible.
