Perhaps your input impedance is an issue as my Sony is not that bad (it's great for my bedroom system with having a sleep timer function!)going into my Cayin MT12a tube integrated and it is the only tuner other than my recently tuned up MR74 that will cleanly receive the stations I want in the difficult area (Berkshire Mountains in Mass)where I have it set up. No it's not the Mac but,if you cannot receive a station at all then the audio quality is irrelevant.
I will at some time modify it to force analog reception as Per Brian Beezley's modifications (http://www.ham-radio.com/k6sti/xdr-f1hd.htm)as I do not care for the HD signal from WFCR. Also while it could be more detailed in it's high frequency response it's errors are those of omission it's not "hard or bright" or offensive sounding in any way. Keep in mind that this is a $99 tuner with a $50 rebate that DX's with the best of them.
