I removed all capacitance & hear no difference. The 200pF is just a design measure that would stop any HF oscillations in the RF range if they existed. None existed. EICO designed that circuit to roll-off some high-frequency 'hiss' on marginal signal strength FM stations. Hardly a good design as some Scott tuners placed a switch with an inductor on the front panel to perform the same.My experience with 716P or 715P in quite a few (say a dozen) audio circuits with extensive tube rolling behind me results in a slightly hazy presentation that hides details & accuracy. I just could not get rid of it until the caps was replaced. It is just a slight smearing effect. The AuriCap are more expensive, but at $5-8 each why have something less in the circuit undoing the hard & at times expensive work performed in other areas. The downfall with AuriCap is they take quite a few hours use to break-in. After 200 hours they are well balanced & loses that top-end bite. In some ciecuits I would give a slight edge to quality PIO types.
When I tune/repair guitar amps for sonics, the Sprague orange drop capacitors are hard to beat. For about a $1-$2 each, a best bargain IMHO. If going for a Marshall Plexi amp sound, ceramics are ok. I also use the Sprague orange drop in PS circuits for shunting noise to ground. Again, a great bargain.
If you have those P716P in the Fisher audio chain, then I believe I might win the contest if the listeners like accurate crystal clear audio without grain, edge, slight smearing, etc.
I did find the EICO very sensitive to different tubes & the rectifier tube was as critical as I ever heard in tube based gear. Same business with the 6AQ8 in the RF front-end. Only expensive Telefunken ECC85 played well there. After about 6 or 7 various 6V4/EZ80 tubes, only the Mullard EZ80 would perform to our pleasure.
The reason I could roll so many tubes to my liking is I am a tube dealer with large NOS tube stocks available. I must have tried 15 different 6AL5 tubes. I could not imagine a simple FM detector tube could make a difference- wrong. But, not a large difference like the most other tubes.
BTW- I should purchase a clean Fisher KM60. Perhaps the EICO would take a reserve seat after modifying & rolling tubes.
