Home Radio Road

Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

If you are really serious, read on........

I tried a few FM tube tuners with upgrades and I was still not impressed until I came across the EICO Classic 2200. However, in stock form, the EICO still did not perform great either.

The ceramic caps in the EICO Classic 2200 audio chain must be changed to quality AuriCap or better quality (not lousy 716P 'orange drops'). Fact is, ceramic are good in Marshall & other guitar amps for distortion, not quality home entertainment audio.

The offending ceramic coupling capacitors are on the multiplexer board (dual section flat packs), near the mono/stereo switch & at the 12AU7 output. The dual section ceramic caps shunts some high frequency to ground plus passes audio to the 12AU7. I used 200pF mica as the shunt capacitors. A high value cap here removes audio high-frequencies (not good).

The stock audio output tube is a 12AU7 type. Use any Brimer 12AU7 type or for a ever so slight improvement, an Amperex 6085. Other 12AU7s will degrade the sonics. More info is at the AA 'reviews' section. Use the tubes mentioned & you can not go wrong here! The Brimar or Amperex 6085 are the latest revisions.

The EICO Classic 2200 FM tuner is sensitive to tube rolling just like any audiophile quality amplifier once the ceramic caps are removed. Use other tubes than mentioned in the AA review & the sonics will be degraded into an average tuner even after the AuriCap mods. Be assured after the changes, your jaw will drop on the right FM station. I doubt if other FM tuners will match the EICO Classic 2200 after mods including the highly regarded Scott, Fisher or McIntosh tuners stock or modified.

Anyone want to 'race' (shootout) title for title?

I did not think so.
