a guiter amp--since it was manufactured by Mesa.I owned a Tigris a few years back, and had good luck with Mullard EL84s, and RCA or Visseaux 6V6s. I also used Mullard 12AX7s and 12AU7s.
The Mesa was unique in the fact that it could use 12AX7s, 12AT7s, or 12AU7s. However, there was very little difference in the gain of any of these tubes. You could use a combination if you replace them in pairs. For example--12AX7s for the preamp, 12AU7s driver.
If I had it to do over again, I would look for the very best tubes I could afford in the preamp stage--Amperex or Mullard 12AX7s or 12AU7s. Then I would move on to the driver tubes--If you are trying to save money, perhaps you could try one of the lesser known varieties discussed on this forum (RCA or Sylvania variants). Next I would replace the 6V6s with any of the ones that have already been suggested. I would replace the EL84s last--with any of the suggested tubes, because this could be your biggest expense--since you will have to buy four at once, instead of pairs.
Question for Steve: Have you ever tried RCA 6V6Gs (ST shaped)?
