Ideally you want both and it is possible with good design. David berning conservatively rates his output tubes for 10,000 hours and his amps are highly respected. I know from a friend that the prototype of his 1st amp, the Audionics BA150, triode output again conservatively rated at 150 watts with 2 output tubes, was turned on in 1972 and turned off in 1977 with no noticeable wear on the tubes.
