What sources are you using? The amplifier is probably providing an accurate presentation of the what it is receiving up front. In my experience, CD sources can be tamed with a good out board DAC.
In my experience, I've never been able to mellow a sound out by changing the amplifier tubes.
The dampening between you power amp and your speakers might be a bad match.
