Shorting the capacitor's terminals with a screwdriver will not hurt it, and you should see a spark. (For big power amp p/s caps, you can actually weld the screwdriver to the terminals that way, which can be a nuisance, but still won't hurt the cap provided you can get the screwdriver off.)
Looking at a pic on the web, I see four 60 mfd 500V caps, and a 16V cap. There might be more 'lytics that don't show in the pic. Swapping those out for new should be pretty simple for you or a tech, and just might get you going again.
