RE: Bah! Something "popped" in my Counterpoint SA5 Power Supply!

Can't tell much from the xfmr pics, but xfmr connections often look pretty gungy. I've had loud pops from tube gear and it's always been p/s caps shorting. In one case, a cap popped, but the amp continued to play when on the bench for a couple weeks before it popped again and the tech could see it himself. Also, the caps tested ok with a capacitance meter, which of course doesn't present the caps with their usual operating voltage.

Given the age of the unit, replacing the p/s electrolytic caps might be a good first step. Somewhere around 20 years of age, more or less, they can be expected to fail. I'd swap them out, and check, the p/s circuit board to clean up any damage from flashover. Given that your p/s is separate, it's probably a pretty easy job. If you do it yourself, drain the caps first so you don't get zapped.
