RE: Speaking of rugged 6922 types

airtime, based on my experience with 6DJ8 types I'll take a crack at answering.

1- Can the 7308 be used in my preamp and take being driven hard like the EH and GL versions? - *7308 can be use in any circuit designed for a 6922. I suspect, yes, it would take the beating in your preamp.

2- If so which one would be best? - *The obvious choices are Amperex & Siemens. There are others, but most of those are or were part of the Philips family and are similar, if not identical to Amperex. When I used them, I always preferred the Siemens. Siemens are a bit more extended at frequency extremes and have more sparkle and punch than the Amperex, but they sacrifice a bit of the mid-range performance of the Amperex 7308's, which is quite nice.

3- Is there any sonic advantage using the 7308 over the 6922? - *IMO, not really, it's completely subjective. YMMV. In my case, the Siemens sparkle and punch ultimately wore out its welcome with me. Eventually, sooner or later, I'd pull them and replace them with a Bugle Boy or a nice A-frame dimple-disc 6DJ8 for their mid-range an imaging virtues. I vacillated between the 7308 and the 6DJ8 in that pre for a couple of years. In the end, before passing on that Counterpoint SA3000, I happened onto a small cache of Tele 6922's and after that I never looked back. For me the Tele is the pinnacle for a 6DJ8 type. I still use them in my CAT SL1 along with JJs.
