RE: What's the story with telefunken-elektroakustik in Connecticut?

They were formed, I think, to reproduce some of the no-longer-available Neumann mics, and, most critically for studios, the VF-14 tube used in the U-47.

Prior to them, the only source for a VF-14 was ebay, where the going rate was $1,000 with no guarantee, no return, and a pretty good likelihood of getting a fake. So studios with noisy old VF-14s were really in a fix. The studio where I assisted had a U-47 that started to give off a frying egg sound, and the "fix" was to disconnect one of the grids in the tube. Not a great solution, to be sure. BTW, tube-DIYers will probably enjoy going through the schematic of the U-47, which is very... unusual.

I've worked with a U-47 now fitted with one of their tubes, and it sings like it should. As the VF-14 was basically another tube in a metal case, I assume they sourced that other tube and either made the new metal case or subbed it out.

I'm told their new Neumann mics are up to the standards of the originals, but I haven't worked with one. All in all, many studios are very happy the Connecticut people are on the scene.
