A buddy of mine had a SF phono pre. I got to hear it in my system and it sounded kind of bad and boring. Replacing the JAN 6922s with Russian 6N23s helped, but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. BTW, not all tube gear crushes dynamics. Mine doesn't.
