...I'm not having a serious problem running the level at 40/99s to 70/99s (in dB), I simply want to run the control at least sometimes in the 'gain' positions (= more than 75/99s). I suppose a minor problem of having too much gain is more amplification of the preamp's noise (generated after the level control, which all of it is) than is beneficial.
