i would say looking around the audio world today, tube amps are anything but obsolete. tho they certainly appeared obsolete in the 70's, and perhaps to some exent thru the 90's.

maybe tube technology could be dubbed "antique." that term has a resonance. even for a brand new tube amp just built and purchased and brought home, many of us are already thinking what it would sound like with "nos" tubes from many decades ago.

certainly "high maintenance," as tubes get old, can fail, bias drifts etc.
