Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Yes you do, but it's always been worth it for me

The 6550 straight bottle GE are fantastic tubes also..This brings up another argument to those that feel the British made Genelex are the best 6550/KT88 type of tube.. GEC made these tubes in GB right thru 1988 before ceasing production. CJ and Audio Research as well as a few others used the 6550 straight bottle in their amps all thru the 70s and 80s..At the time,I have price lists that show that the 6550 GE and the Genelex KT88 were within 3 usd of each other for a matched pair.Being our dollar was so strong against other currencies at that time, they may have been even cheaper. The point is,even tho CJ and ARC built some very expensive amps using the 6550,they opted for the 6550 GE over the Genelex/GEC KT88.I don't think price was the issue because these were not high volume amps where a couple bucks per unit would make a massive difference in profit.I think they thought the GE 6550 sounded better.
When I started acquiring different tubes since the early 90s,the NOS Genelex and GEC KT88s I was getting, many were coming out of factories where they were used in plasma cutters and shaker tables. They were used mostly in the labs of manufacturing facilities. They do last a long time but there are many that arced over because they were run so hard in these machines.I got 7 still in the package out of the Saline Mich. Ford Plastics plant in 1998 with the data sheets.Five are labeled Genelex and two are labeled GEC but GEC ones don't have a data sheet but are still boxed..Anyway,I bought the manager lunch and he just said here, take em..They haven't used them since the 80s.I should tear those babies out of the plastic bags but I think it will hurt their value if I sell them.
